We Ohio's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Columbus rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Columbus pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Columbus Rodent Removal Tip:
Are rats smart animals?
When we think of rats, we tend to envision those tiny little claws, and the sharp teeth, and the general grossness that humans have come to associate with the little rodents. We feel an immediate surge of disgust, but this is often a quite unfair reaction. There's so much more to rats than we tend to at first assume.
Rats are quite fantastic creatures, ones that deserve our respect, as well as our compassion.
So, to answer the title question…
The short answer is yes, they are. Rats are surprisingly clever creatures, which becomes apparent once you examine their behavior more closely. The first thing worth noting about these much-maligned rodents is that they've got an excellent memory. You see, since rats are mainly nocturnal creatures, they tend to suffer from pretty poor eyesight. So a rat isn't likely to see around itself all that well, but that only serves to make this skill that much more remarkable. Rats are known to compensate for this bad vision with a remarkable sense of navigation. This is how they're able to make their way through the world and return to their nest, and it is believed that once a rat learns a specific route, it will never forget it. Pretty impressive, right?
Rats are also capable of thinking through problems and finding solutions. If you pay careful attention to the behavior of an intruder rat, its intelligence will easily become apparent. First of all, rats know how to make their nests in a place where they're not likely to be discovered. For example, a favorite hang-out spot of these rodents tends to be your attic. This is because the rat has observed your patterns and knows you won't go into the attic as often as you do other rooms in your home.
In fact, rats have often been compared to dogs in regards to their intelligence. Rats that are kept as pets are often taught various tricks by their keepers, and they take to these new learnings with astonishing ease. This is a testament to a rat's incredible ability to learn, adapt, and grow its intelligence, quite similar to the way you'd teach a dog to do tricks.
Rats aren't only highly intelligent creatures, but also quite developed emotionally. They are some of the most social creatures known to man and will develop strong bonds with other rats, care for their families, and so on. Even more interestingly, they will also form a bond with the human who cares for them (in the case where the rat is kept as a pet), as well as groom and regularly interact with the human.
Did you know that pet rats have been observed to bounce up and down excitedly when they see their human? This closely resembles the excitement a dog feels when its master returns home.
What this means…
While the repulsion we tend to feel toward rats is understandable, the rat's empathy and intelligence should at least prompt us to treat them humanely. It's generally inadvisable to let invading rats live in peace in your home, as they expose you and your pets to a hoard of nasty diseases. But you are dealing with a highly complex and intelligent creature here, so when you attempt to dispose of it, you should always try to do this in a manner that is cruelty-free, for example by use of a live trap.
